The History of West Roxbury

Originally part of the town of Roxbury, which was initially settled in 1636, West Roxbury formed its own government in 1851 and, soon after, was annexed by Boston in 1874.  West Roxbury was originally a farming community.  But in 1851, rail service was extended into West Roxbury, allowing families to live in the new town but commute to work in Boston.  This was followed a wave of housing construction in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  In addition, Brook Farm, a 19th century utopian experimental community, attracted many notable American intellectuals.

Today, the neighborhoods' tree-lined streets and mostly single family homes give it a suburban feel in an urban setting.  Life in the neighborhood often centers around political and civic activism as well as local parishes and youth athletic leagues.

West Roxbury is easily accessible via public transportation and the commuter rail.  As a result, universities, museums, and other rich cultural offerings are just a quick subway ride away.
